Artist's Comments

This is my May entry for the fan art competion on the CoX forums. The task was to remake a classic work of art in City of Heroes/Villains style.

This is based on Edward Hopper's Nighthawks [link] from 1942.

The lady is a player character named Massacre Melanie copyright Suichiro. Other characters copyright Edward Hopper and Paragon Studios.

I felt I might just as well do a collage to achieve maximum effect, so the picture is a merge of some screenshots from the game and the Hopper original, with some overpainting done to blend them together and change some of the characters.

Why would you possibly have this in scraps? It is really an epic recreation of the masterpiece. You caught it perfectly. Definitely a favorite of mine. All my best in this months contest!!

This is even a nomination for a DD and I'll make sure it gets that! :)

I'm very flattered over the great response this picture is getting. When I got the idea I thought that it would have the most impact if I managed to keep as much of the original as possible. As I said in the comments this meant doing a collage with overpainting instead of my own interpretation. You can even see the original painting showing through from the bottom layer (the whole wall around the bathroom door, patches near the seats along the counter, around the figures and in their faces, etc).

So it doesn't feel right to get credit for what is really the genius of the original artist and my contribution is not to screw it up too badly while adding some CoX references :D. That's why I decided to put it in scraps without a signature. I consider this a practice piece and one that I learned a lot from. If I'd spent couple of hours more on it I'd correct the cast shadows and the light on the streets so it looked more coherent. I blame the fever I had when I submitted it for not noticing :(

Thanks again for the encouragement, but I rather have one of 'my own' pieces get a DD somewhere down the line instead of this particular one. Hope I got my reasoning across, no offense meant, TA!
:iconthorsassassin:
Aaah ok that makes sense and no offense taken whatsoever. In fact you have my respect for stating that. It really came out great though. I was looking for it and couldn't see. Sassy had mentioned something when she first saw it that she thought it was overlaid on the original but she couldn't convince me lol.

Thanks for that explanation and it doesn't effect the contest at all, there was no stated rules against it. Best of luck in the competition. :)

I hadn't even noticed that you posted this on DA, until my friend pointed it out to me. I respect your decisions to keep this is scraps, but it was hard to find! ;_;

I know that Mel just happened to have the right color scheme to fit the original, but thank you for including her. It's been one of my favorite pieces of her, because not only is it an homage to a well known art piece, but the piece itself is rendered beautiful.

I always thought to myself that the gentleman besides her was a member of the Family. He just needed a tommygun on the counter besides him. :3
:iconfunnyfacedesign:
Yeah, sorry for 'hiding' it here but it was made in a way I didn't feel comfortable displaying. And yes, I was imagining the man as a Marcone boss and figured maybe Mel had some shady dealings with him. She's contemplating the flame in her hand and one can only speculate if the fact that the place is closed now has something to do with what happens the next few minutes :D
